I got an idea of how to make my drawings look hip-antique. I would start with a normal, dark outlined drawing and then add some white areas and some grey areas to the rest. I thought this would give an out of focused or difused lighting sorta look. Then I found the lens blur filter and played with that for two of the images. i dunno.

I watched a little "Rock n' Rule" last week and ended up doodling an inspired version of the lady character. It's a really weird movie made in Canada during the late 80's. There's a lot of good stuff in there worth checking out if you're into the animations and stuff. The little doodly characters on the left are there for funskies. Hope you dig it.

I've been meaning to post this for months and refused to post anything until I gave my friend, Brandon Cuellar, a proper shout out.

Anyhow what you're looking is a before and after what my layouts turned into after passing them off to Brandon. He can do so much with so little. His work is exceptionally inspirational and incredible. I was beyond lucky to have this artistic genius be such a large part of this project. I couldn't have been more happy:)

I've been doing lots of drawings on paper lately which means more effort to post. I get real lazy when it comes to scanning and prepping them to show on my blogidy-blog.

The last one in this series is Moebius influenced. I would like to start doing more detailed doodles like that one. Figure out some patterns and stuff. ALSO I did four of these drawrings in a couple of hours. See if you can guess which ones. Nevermind, don't waste your time. I love you.

Oh yeah. Most importantly, I was thinking about trying to sell my sketches. Like at a Pasadena Artwalk sort of thing. I was thinking about maybe $15-$20 per real drawing. Just toying with the idea. What do you guys think?

Hey welcome back. Felicia and I just returned from our 10 day excursian to Thailand. We got to check out tons of stuff while we were there. Here's some sketches I did during our trip. They pretty much blow since I was usually drawing on moving things (cars, planes, boats, elephants, etc.). I also included a photograph of me and my girlfriend posing with this elephant. It took my money and bowed back to me a couple of times soon after the picture was taken.

My old friend and voice actor, April Rose, Got in touch with me a while back and asked if I could do the art on her voice demo cd. I was like "sure, I'd love too." So I did. She really is a fantastic voice actor and was nice enough to do the voice of Ginger Flamingo in my senior thesis film.

I was inspired by this really awesome animated short I saw today on the Cartoon Brew entitled, "Medusa", by Nick DiLiberto. His designs are fun, efficient and super animatable. In other words not only were they appealing, but they gave him the stress free ability to focus on the animation and not slave over the drawing. So I did some of my own takes of his style from memory which evolved into my own character that could hopefully exist in Nick's universe. There is of course a couple of irrelevant doodles in the mix, but they help the composition or something.

Hey duders. I'm sorry for the lack of posting in the past couple of months. My life hit a small speed bump and I've been busy keeping myself on track and doing my best in making good decisions. I've also been busy working on a comic book project for fun in my off time and have been rather committed to it. Well, overall I feel pretty good about donating some time to the ol' blog and want to post some stuff for you. Actually I'll admit that it was really Mike Maloney's comment that read "Post something already, Asshole!". I can respect that and want to respect that. So here's my first post.

This is Chap Whitman. He's the "2nd fastest man in the universe!" He used to be the first fastest man, but then was showed up by an alien that can go way faster than him. Now his life is a mess since he's second best, but maybe with a little love and friendship or sheer will can he achieve his original position in life. Sounds lame right now, but I'll keep it as an idea that might work well for a comic or something. I dunno. Hope you dig it!

About the film:
This year for 5 Second Animation Day at Titmouse I worked on one episode of Ginger Jack-Off. It's a character my friend, Matt Taylor, and I came up with about a year ago. Essentially, we just wanted to make something weird and funny.
Also please keep in mind that I wasn't going for the best animation here. The challenge for me was to make a narrative in a day. Something that I find rather difficult for myself to do. I'm just glad it's done.
I gotta give my special creds to Juno LEE for animating that horrific, sci-fi butthole, Kyohei Takayama for doing all the Back grounds in the film and Matt Taylor and Ashley Fischer for providing me with some sweet voice acting.

How often do you hear that one. My good friend, Juno Li, suggested I try this animation exercise in timing. Have your character do an antic and then make him/her jump within a 1-2 frame blur into mid-air pose. Then jumble around from pose to pose on 4's with no inbetweens and land that sucka. Holy shit it works! Thanks Japan.

Lightening fx were added later for fun. Another "Juno" suggestion.

My Dybuuk

I was listening to a short story that I found on my friend's itunes playlist this week. It was called "The Dybuuk in the Bottle". It was a fun little story about an asshole demon that an amateur rabi finds in a bottle near his house and attempts to have the demon do his bidding. However, the Demon makes his living situation rather frustrating so the amateur rabi guy asks an awesome rabi guy to help him get rid of the demon that has taken over his house. The awesome rabi guy assumes ownership of the house and from there is able to beat the demon at his own game. The amateur rabi guy learns a valuable life lesson and gets his home back.

Anyhow, this the what I thought the demon looked like.

This one was going to be about these two kids and their shitty cat adventuring their way to an abandoned, haunted Alkatraz-like prison. I was originally planning on it lacking in dialogue and have the story told musically. Though I still kinda like this concept I still feel more passionate about the idea I've been developing for the past couple of months. Unfortunately I will not be posting anything on that film idea until it goes into production. If it goes into production.

Technical stuff abou this drawing: It was all eyeballed and drawn with a Bic ballpoint pen. I did add in the jail on the island and a few other lines in Photoshop. I honestly had this drawing laying around for months now and I'm happy to just see it posted. Hope you dig.

These are characters I created a while ago when thinking up a new film idea. The concept was simple. Alien monsters attack simple farm folks. Farm folks and aliens engage in super awesome, animated combat.

However, I came up with a better idea so this one is now completely ditched. I still kinda like these characters though and will probably use them for another project. Anyhow, hope you dig.

Jacob is a penis/high school student. Usually he's just kinda awkward, flaccid and insecure. When he feels confident and glorious, Jacob will stand tall and speak in a slower, dumber and deeper voice. He will also give all the ladies everything he's got. Once he's given it everything he has to offer, Jacob typically lets out a loud sneeze and blows snot everywhere. Jacob does his best to stay warm in the winter by bundling up and absorbing whatever he heat he can gain from his pants. These are all matter of fact-facts of Jacob. However, the most important fact that Jacob wants you to know about Jacob is that JACOB LOVES TO PARTY!!!

I apologize to anyone who has lost any faith in me as an artist for this post. I started drawing Jacob as a result of my old roomie, David Reilly (cheddardave.blogspot.com), pointing out that the doodle-lady on the left corner of this page has a penis shaped head. Then I redrew her head- shape and turned it into what it really wanted to be. A highschool-penis student. I then continued to draw Jacob in different moods while explaining his character to David. We were laughing a lot. The scales that you see next to these drawings was David's idea. Anyhow, I've been meaning to post this for months now and I'm proud? that it's finally here. So with that said I hope you dig, Jacob.

Holy Shit! The walls are painted!

So this is what the wall in our living room apartment looked like before anything was done to it. Big and lonely.
Then about a month ago, my mom suggested that Felicia and I paint the whole damn wall! I was surprised by her suggestion, since I thought it would go against her general rules for decorating a house. She's an interior designer/architect so she knows her stuff. Anyhow, we did some thumbnails together and I pretty much stuck with the third or fourth little sketch we made. She helped me pick out the colors and then I made this to-scale graphic in photoshop. I went through a few other shapes and stuff, but this was the best one. Those little squares with circles painted in them are gonna be designs that I will paint on three canvas's.
Anyhow, this is what it looks like now. We'll be getting a new white couch soon and it'll look super dope. Lemme know what you think.

So a few posts ago I showed you guys the drawing I made for my Thank You cards this year. It was two chicks screaming and ripping out their hair. I named them my "Thank You Gals". Ben Li left a comment that requested I make some "Thank You Dudes". So I did and here they are. Ben gets to keep the original sketch.

So a couple of weeks ago, on a Monday night, I visited an old college-friend of mine, Mike Dobler. He was having a really awesome kickback at his new residence, a warehouse located somewhere in a Los Angeles' industrial zone. It was super cool kickin' back, meeting new people and listening to the incredible electronic music that Mike and his crew where inventing on the spot. This place was one of the most creative environments I've ever set foot in. They had a copper painted G5 hanging from a ceiling beam that you could swing on and a five foot halfpipe to skate in. It really kinda reminded me of Shredder's hang out in the first live action TMNT movie minus the bull shit. I was feeling inspired so I asked one his housemates if I could borrow a pen and paper. He was awesome and hooked it up. Anyhow, I don't think these are particularly good drawings, but I do like them since they were inspired drawings. There was one more drawing page I did that night, but I gave it to my new friend, Richard, who told me he liked it. I really had no choice. hehe.

MY "DINO-RAMA"

I did this doodle sometime last week. I really liked it, because it reminded me of how and what I loved to draw when I was a seven-year old baby kid. Of course this is an updated version of my ancient "drawing style", but I was also generally happy with the shapes I made while drawing these dino-animals. I liked it so much that I wanted to color it, however, I had a hard time coloring it the way I usually do in photoshop. As a result I was pretty much stuck with my first choice of colors. I then added some noise and a gaussian blur to make it easier on the eyes. I very certain that I like the original brush pen sketch more so I posted both of them.

I kinda like this guy. He was the result of me rendering out a drawing I didn't care much about at the start. It was a lot fun to just sit down and zone out for a bit while rendering this odd illustration. The sticky tabs on the right were some doodles I did at work while I was waiting for stuff to render. 5 Second Animation Day: A-Trak Recess

So what ended up destroying me the hardest was the least expected step of all. Compositing. I spent a whole night at Titmouse just trying to get the damn thing right and still needed a little extra help the next day by my director, Juno Lee and compositing master, Keith Yan. I also gotta give a shout out to my friend Brian Kim for helping me color more than half of this micro-film. Anyhow, after many excruciating hours of sitting in front of the computer waiting for that awesome render, at 1am Thursday night I was ready to throw some sound in there. However, I had another dilemma. I needed music and our lady-in charge, Shannon Prynoski, rightfully wasn't at the company at 1am to let me skim through her public domain music library. So I went online and found a decent public domain music page called Purpleplanetmusic.com. I gave the website name out to three more of my friends that were in the same boat. I finished my sound design around 2am Friday morning and was more than happy to go home and sleep in my bed. Finally, Friday 6pm rolls around and everyone was going nuts in anticipation for 5 Second Day. The show got on the road and everyone had an awesome time laughing profusely and blowing their minds. It was a good day, hehe.

So this what is basically the same animation as what you see in the final version. I just changed the hair color and cat color and slapped in some lasers and explosions shortly after this was done. It took me a total of 13 hours to animate what you see here. I still don't know if that's fast or not, but I was generally pleased with how quickly I was able to produce this footage. (Please forgive any lag if you experience any while watching this clip).

Next... Make backgrounds. I already had a method in mind since a week or two ago my friend, Snakebite (i'm not kiddn'), showed me how to make halftone illustrations in Photoshop. I always wanted to do that so I thought it be wise to use the halftone technique in the most gratuitous of ways with my BG's. I did these last Sunday and was saddened and surprised with how long they took. Oh well, I was at least relatively content with them so again, I stuck with it and couldn't wait for the next day when I would have the chance to finish animating my short.

SOOoooo... I tried drawing her in some fun poses and then just ended up key framing the whole thing within a couple hours without much direction in mind. I was pretty happy with what I did so I stuck with it and knew what I had to do next.

Yo, 5 Sec Animation Day at Titmouse, Here's how it went down!

Last year at Titmouse, we were given the opportunity to make a 5 second animation short just for the fun of it. Matt Taylor Junpei and I made a short called "Field Trip Day" and were super pleased and excited by it. Anyhow, this year all of us felt like doing our own things and I knew that I wanted to do some sort of crazy action shot. Seeing that this year, we actually had a full day plus after hours to work on our films I figured my idea would be possible.

So I do have to admit, that I did cheat a little and got started on my designs and storyboarding the week before, but I knew this was the only way it was going to happen. But I only put in 3 hours worth of work.

Anyhow, so here's the original concept sketches I made for it. I liked the lean female character a lot and got curious as to whether or not I could actually animate her quickly.

These are just a couple of lucky and over glorified work doodles. I hope you don't mind the nakedness. I figured the vamp gal didn't need any pants and the devil dude's little wiener package was drawn too funny for me to censor. Either way, I was happy with the way they turned out considering that I tried to finish them quickly so I could get back to work. Maybe I'll revisit these designs someday... maybe. Hope you dig 'em.

Doodle Mountain

So yeah, these were tons of fun. I was just up one night and wanted to chill out by doing some doodles. I first started out doing pencil drawings then I began making some nice confident lines, but they were to light to see on the page without me going back over them and losing their initial energy. Then I grabbed a ball point pen and had at it. I did a couple of pages of these nonsense doodles and then decided to consolidate the doodles into composition. And that's how the drawing you see on the top was made. I call it "Doodle Mountain". You should really take a good look around. You'll find some sneaky, funny stuff.

I've been getting antsy working with these complicated models for this Guitar Hero project. So I finally caved and did this stupid animation for fun tonight just so I can remind myself how much I love it. It worked and I might be doing more stupid rough animations for fun. Hello, I'm very sorry for being such a wiener and not updating this blog in forever. My only excuse is that I've been busy animating dudes rock out with their cocks out for the Next, Next Guitar Hero game staring Metallica. On a lighter note, it turned out pretty good and the best part is we didn't have to camp-out at Titmouse during the course of the project! ZERO CASUALTIES. Awesome. Also my wonderful girlyfriend of 5 years, Felicia, moved in a couple of months ago and it's been harder for me to get around to taking care of my personal internet duties. Now that she's more settled in I think I can start managing the blog again. I really look forward to it. Either way, it's nice to be back.

My Buddy Junpei Got Put Outta Commission...

This past 4th of July my friend, Junpei, got his face mauled by his own dog when he was giving it a "good-bye" kiss (heheh, ehhhh). The damn thing bit down on both of his cheeks and he had to get 30 stitches on his face! Yikes! Anyhow, this past Tuesday nine other friends, colleagues and I visited him at his house and gave "Junplaya" these get well cards. I was asked to make the card that gets circulated around the office for everyone to sign. It's the large drawing posted with the two ladies giving Junpei a silly boner.

I also posted two other Titmouse workers' get well cards since they're pretty rad and funny. These two awesome animators live outta town and got busy as soon as they heard the news.

Yesterday was nice. I went to a tasty curry resturaunt in Little Tokyo for lunch with my friends. Once we finished, we decided that it was too early to go back to titmouse. Happily we went to the Japanese bookstore that was conveniently located 10 feet away from us.

I basically lost my shit when we entered. They had too much good stuff. I "broke the bank" as a result and picked up four new books to add to my library. The stars of this book bindge was "Cannibis Works" by Tanaka Tatsuyuki and "Orange" by Koji Morimoto. Both are absolutely incredible and ridiculously inspiring.

This illustration I did tonight is a result of that inspiration. Hope you dig it.

I'm Back. Finally!

These last 3 weeks have been hectic as heck I tells ya'. Wowee. We finally wrapped up Guitar Hero 4 last Friday morning after camping out at Titmouse for almost 3 weeks! I mean, we would go home maybe 3-4 days of the week, but the rest of the time we were very literally living there. Anyhow, the team and I like the product we made and I can't wait to show screen grabs and video clips once the game comes out. This is the first sketch I got to do outside of work. Nothing special, but I needed to chill out and just do some doodlies. Hope you can dig it.
